Mr. Wight has taught classes and lectured on the subject of environmental laws and regulations throughout the country, including at the U. S. Department of Justice Advanced Environmental Crimes Seminar, in New Orleans, La. Mr. Wight authored the majority of the FBI manual for investigations for environmental crimes. He wrote the curriculum, organized, and taught at state certified environmental crimes schools for California Law Enforcement Officers and regulatory personnel. In 1994 he was certified by the State of California as a Registered Environmental Assessor. At his retirement Mr. Wight was named by the FBI as a “Master Instructor,” an honor afforded only a few. His name is on a plaque at the FBI academy in Quantico, Va.
During his service as an FBI agent Mr. Wight served as a firearms instructor, and as the principal defensive tactics instructor for the San Diego Division. He was also a team leader for the SWAT team. He holds the rank of 4th degree black belt in the Japanese martial art of Aikido.
On March 17, 1995, Mr. Wight was flown to Washington, D.C. And given an award by the Attorney General of the United States for his contributions to environmental enforcement. Only two other FBI agents were so honored.
In January 1995, Norman I. Wight retired from the FBI, with a national reputation as one of its few experts in the environmental field.
